Oletko koskaan ihmetellyt, mihin koko ihmiskunta kerääntyy joulukuussa? En minäkään, kunnes pahaa-aavistamattomana kuljin pitkin Oxford Streetiä Lontoossa.
Tiesin ottavani riskin saapuessani ostoshelvettiin, mutta en silti osannut varautua vartijoihin raahaamassa kirkuvaa teinityttöä ulos kaupasta, enkä edes vanhemman naishenkilön ilmiselvään taklausyritykseen ostoskärryillään.
Tämän joulun virallinen hitti näytti olevan uudelleenmiksaus Mariah Careyn klassikosta, nimeltään All I want for Christmas is you... and cute monkey pyjamas from Primark for my second cousin.
Liian monien syvien huokausten ja jatkuvan silmien pyörittelyn jälkeen luovutin ja juoksin takaisin Itä-Lontooseen. Tue paikallista yrittäjää-liike sai juuri aivan uuden merkityksen.

Have you ever wondered where all human life gathers in December? Neither had I, until I walked down Oxford Street in London.
I knew I had taken a risk by entering the shopping hell. Yet, I had not expected to be welcomed by a screaming teenage girl dragged out of a store by security guards or an evil, elderly lady very obviously trying to tackle me with her shopping cart.
The official tune for this Christmas seemed to be a remix of Mariah Carey's classic, titled All I want for Christmas is you... and cute monkey pyjamas from Primark for my second cousin.
After some serious eye rolling and a few too many deep sighs later I did the unacceptable and ran back to East London. Support your local businesses-movement just got a brand new meaning.

Yesterday I was awoken from a nap by a z-list rapper shooting a music video outside my window. The other week I witnessed several photo shoots taking place on those same stairs. What an interesting daytime activity. Also, the fact that the best bagel bakery in London is closer than my mailbox has become kind of a big deal.

I love good ideas. It's a shame my little head rarely comes up with any of those. Although, I'm hardly the only one with limited brain capacity; I mean clearly Mr. Audigier did not think things through as he first sketched out the words "Ed Hardy".

En ole ikinä oikein oppinut ymmärtämään festareiden tarkoitusperää. Pidän hotelleistä enemmän kuin teltoista, korkokengistä enemmän kuin kumisaappaista ja perhosista enemmän kuin hyttysistä. Kunnes löysin itseni Nation of Gondwanasta, josta tuli juuri jokavuotinen traditio. Tässä tapauksessa teltta ei kuitenkaan mahtunut mukaan. Eivätkä kumisaappaat. Hyttysiäkin näin vain kolme (laskin). Paljon tärkeämpää oli näyttää siltä, kuin olisi ollut hereillä viimeisen kuukauden, opettaa uusille ystävillemme kuinka vallata leiri ja ennen kaikkea rakastaa ystäviään. Hippi mikä hippi.

I've always had difficulties in understanding the true essence of festivals. I prefer a hotel over a tent, high heels over rain boots and butterflies over mosquitos. Until now. Nation of Gondwana festival just became an annual tradition. Although in our case it didn't include a tent. Or rain boots. And a very few mosquitos. Much more important was to look like you had been awake for the past month, teach our new friends how to take over a camp and to love your friends. I'm such a hippie.

I have always found it a little difficult to believe one could get banned from a club in Berlin.
Every weekend I'm lucky to witness the most absurd incidents taking place in clubs; from stealing record players in the middle of a set to covering a fellow raver in toilet paper and sending him out to the dance floor. I'm not even going to start with what happens in Berghain.
However, a few weeks ago a brave individual whose identity shall remain secret managed to complete the mission impossible.
And what's the secret?
1) Get wasted. 2) Try to steal the DJ's belongings. 3) Get kicked out. 4) Try to enter the club again. 5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 as long as required.
And just say "no, no, no". You know Amy would have.

I couldn't stand another hour of daylight

Takana epäilemättä elämäni rankin viikko. Berlin Fashion week July 2011.

Olen nähnyt Adam Portia useammin kuin parhaita ystäviäni, juonut enemmän Gin & Toniceja kuin vettä ja tanssinut enemmän kuin kävellyt.
En ole tuntenut varpaitani viimeiseen 72 tuntiin, mutta ulkonäön perusteella ne yrittävät irtautua ruumiistani ja mennä nurkkaan kuolemaan. Viikko päättyi maailman parhaan Ricardon seurassa Watergate Open Air partyissä. En jaksanut edes yllättyä kun aamulla avatessa laukkuni ulos putkahti kaksi vihreää muovihedelmää, glitterillä kuorrutettu passi ja pala korkokenkääni.

This has been the hardest week in my life. Berlin Fashion week July 2011.

I think I've seen Adam Port more often than my best friends, drank more Gin & Tonics than water and danced more than walked.
I haven't felt my toes for the past 72 hours, but from what I can tell by the look of them, they want to detach themselves from my body and go die in a corner. The week ended with world's greatest Ricardo at the Watergate Open Air party. I wasn't even surprised as I woke up in the morning, opened my bag, and found two green plastic fruit, a passport covered in glitter and a piece of my high heel.

Voi olla varma että on Roomassa, kun ensimmäinen asia johon kiinnittää huomiota lentokentällä on massiivinen Emporio Armani valomainos ja katutaiteilija tarjoutuu ostamaan allekirjoittaneen matkaseuralaisineen 30 000 euron hintaan. Italialaiset ovat taatusti pilvessä hiilihydraateista. Litroittain viiniä, liikaa David Guetta hittejä ja moottoripyörämatkoja Gay Villageen. Istuessani lentokoneessa kohti Berliiniä, toivoin salaa, että kone olisikin lähtenyt ilman minua.

Well, not exactly, luckily Easyjet does. You know you're in Rome, when the first thing grabbing your attention at the airport is a massive Emporio Armani sign and a guy on the street offers to buy both you and your friend for 30 000€. I'm convinced Italians are high on carbohydrates. After litres of wine, too many David Guetta hits, blistered feet and motorcycle rides to Gay Village, you barely make it to the plane back to Berlin, just to secretly wish you had missed it.

Viime lauantaina ennustin Suomen voiton etukäteen ja juhlistin kyseistä kansanjuhlaa jo ennen ottelua. Vallankumouksellista, sanon minä. I am convinced that I possess great supernatural skills.
Last Saturday I predicted Finland's great victory (ice-hockey, people, ice-hockey) and celebrated before the actual match had even taken place. Revolutionary, I say. The fact that the celebrations almost kept me from watching the match should be left aside. Seriously, who has time to watch ice-hockey when you can row around in a rubber boat fishing vodka bottles? Trust me when I say that I was overjoyed on Monday morning as I walked into my room and found the left-overs from Saturday's party on my floor. Mental note: confetti and gin tonics don't mix well.

Luulen, että tässä pitäisi ihan tosissaan alkaa huolestua naapureideni mielenterveydestä. Hyväksyn ulkoilma-asuntolan pystyttämisen sisäpihallemme, mutta kun kotiintullessa on kompastua pikku pyromaanien aikaansaannoksiin, en tiedä pitäisikö olla peloissaan vai huvittunut.

I think I should seriously start to worry about the mental health of my neighbours. I can deal with them building an open air hostel in the yard, but when on my way home I almost trip on a half-burnt mattress, I don't know if I should be scared or amused. Poor little pyromaniacs.

Keväässä ja kesässä on tunnetusti monia ilon aiheita, mutta yksi asia ylitse muiden on sisäpihamme, joka kevään tullen muuttuu aarrearkuksi. Eilen illalla kun olin viemässä roskia ulos, löysin hylätyn postilaatikon, jonka sisällä lukee Schmidt/Bauer. Olen ihan varma, että laatikko on kuulunut Jack Bauerille. Siispä kannoin sen sisälle mahdollista Ebay-miljonääriyttä varten.
Paras asia kuitenkin on takatalossa asuvien, huumausaineita nauttivien naapureidemme kesäprojekti. Nämä kyseiset yksilöt kun ovat kääntäneet pihamme ikiomaksi Golden Gatekseen. Pilveä, sohva, aurinko ja pissan kellertämä patja. Mitä muuta sitä ihminen tarvitsee? (Kuva alla on kuin nykypäivän Where's Waldo?:sta. Ostoskärryt, check. Nojatuoli, check. Turhaa roskaa, check.)

There are quite a few delightful aspects about spring and summer, but undoubtedly one of the most exciting things is our inner yard turning into a treasure chest. Last night as I was taking out the trash, i found an abandoned mailbox. Inside it says Schmidt/Bauer. I would like to think it belonged to Jack Bauer. I could become an Ebay-millionaire anytime now.
However, the best thing is, that the junkies living in the back building have decided to turn the yard into their very own Golden Gate. Weed, sofa, sun, and a piss-stained mattress, what else does one need? (The photo above is like a modern day Where's Waldo? Shopping cart, check. Armchair, check. Useless junk, check.)

Sometimes I stumble upon things that retain my faith in humanity. Today it was this. If you can make a house float, what is there you can't do?

Pixar’s animated movie UP has inspired the makings of this balloon house.
On the morning of March 5th, National Geographic Channel and a team of scientists, engineers and balloon pilots launched the 16 x 16 foot house with 300 8 foot balloons. The house floated around for about an hour and reached an altitude of over 10,000 feet.

- Seeing a woman enter a club on my way to work on a Thursday morning at 10 am.
- Realizing that I saved 120€ by ripping this poster off a wall on my way to a grocery store instead of ordering it online.
- This song at 04:40. (I was mentally on my way somewhere when I heard it the first time.)

And learned how to pretend and lie

I'm convinced that people are finally losing it completely.

Case No. 1: There I am, sitting on the U-Bahn like on every other day. As I pass Rosenthaler Platz and take a sip of my Fritz Limonade, I glance over at a middle-aged man sitting across from me. Warm winter coat, jeans, long hear on a ponytail, hiking boots, a fist-sized ceramic skull glued onto one of his Timberland boots. Sure, go ahead, be an undercover goth, but to glue a candle holder on your boot? Seriously?

Case No. 2: Still sitting on the same U-Bahn, now passing Bernauer Straße. I take a look at a young guy sitting next to the skull-man. The guy is holding onto a large plastic bag and squeezing it tightly. Nothing unusual, except for the fact that he is remarkably pale and seems to be sweating an awful lot. As he unbuttons his coat, a small package falls on the floor. I take a closer look at the plastic bag; it seems to be filled with boxes of Toffifee and Kinder chocolate. Alright, going to a little sister's birthday party, I can deal with that. The guy lifts up his sweater and starts to pull out one Kinder package after another. After he is done with the upper body, he moves onto his pants and keeps stuffing the boxes in the plastic bag. The guy gets up at the same station as I do and runs out of the U-Bahn sweating furiously, the chocolate boxes falling out of the bag and spreading all over the place. Apparently, Kinder is the new heroin.

Case No. 3: In this case, I'm not sure if the person going bananas is the one responsible for creating this song, or if it's me for loving it so much. It might just be the best thing that ever happened to me. Thank you Laura for bringing this to my awareness.

On olemassa toimiston pikkujouluja ja toimiston pikkujouluja. Tämänvuotiset olivat ehdottomasti jälkimmäistä kaliiperiä. Silloin kun rummuttavat jääkarhut ovat illan vaisuinta antia, kyseessä ovat hyvät pikkujoulut.

Trainspotting gone miinus 10 vuotta. Plus Jägermeister-pullo. Priceless.

Koska viikonloppu alkoi tuttuun tapaan keskiviikkona, pyörimme kuuntelemaan Jaakko Eino Kalevia ja lievittämään koti-ikävää (ai mitä?) Kaurismäen filmausten avulla. Suomalaisten laaja ääniala oli tosin liikaa saksalaisille ja Polizei keskeytti partyt. Ulkomaalaisvihaa, aivan selkeästi.

Because the weekend now starts on Wednesdays, we crawled to Kreuzberg to see Jaakko Eino Kalevi live and ease the homesickness (say what?) with the aid of some Kaurismäki movies. Since us Finns tend to get rather loud, the Polizei had to interrupt the party. Damn those Germans.

No tähänhän tämä taas meni.
Juhlan aiheita tuntuu löytyvän vaikka millä mitalla. (Ainakin silloin, kun niitä keksii itse.) Torstaina viihdyin Larpakon kanssa Twin-lehden julkaisupartyissa, sponsored by ensi vuoden puolella Berliiniin liikkeen avaava Urban Outfitters. Tilaisuuden tarkoitusperä jäi hieman hämäräksi, mutta yhtälö cooli baari + tyylikkäät ihmiset + ilmainen olut tuntuu toimivan aina. Kyseiset kekkerit jäivät osaltamme lyhyeen, koska piti juosta U-Bahniin ja seuraaviin partyihin. Kyllä, kyseessä ovat ne jo kertaalleen mainitut Orlando Bloominkin suosimat hotelli-partyt. Kyllä, olen edelleen katkera, että en tavannut kyseistä herraa.

Halloween 2010; pupuasuun sonnustautunut herra tarjosi tiskillä hörpyn Gin & Tonicia, 20 cm korkoihin varustautunut ihmisjäänne antoi pusun poskelle hopeisella glitter-huulipunallaan, ystäväni luuli olevansa sammakko ja tekno raikasi.

Shokeeraavaa? Ei niinkään, Berliinissä kun jokainen viikonloppu on Halloween.

Juhlistaaksemme australialaisten poikasten muuttoa Berliinistä, suuntasimme King Kongiin päälläni märkää kultaistanoutajaa muistuttava asia. Jos se on ostettu Mongoliasta, sen on pakko olla cool. Samaisesta syystä se saattaa myös oikeasti olla kultaisennoutajan turkki. Mielenkiintoista.

The migration of our lovely Australian friends was a reason good enough to head to King Kong bar last Saturday. I wore a fur coat questionably alike to a wet golden retriever. If it was purchased in Mongolia, it has to be cool. For the same exact reason it might just be the fur of a golden retriever. Interesting.

Ei ole parempaa tapaa viettää perjantai-iltaa, kuin kuvaamalla ja haastattelemalla humalaisia hipstereitä. Tehtävä kuitattiin onnistuneeksi muutaman viinilasillisen voimin ja kamera kääntyi kohti omaa naamaa. Tosin oma, kuten myös rikostoverini Amelien hipster-status on varmasti enemmän kuin ansaittu, nimim. Apparelin ympyrähuivit ja maksimekot.. Vähän Palmin Normania ja Blanchen Obia vielä kyytipojaksi!

Elämästä tulee huomattavasti mielenkiintoisempaa, kun muuttaa vähemmistöjen kansoittamalle alueelle. Sitä saattaa vaikka herätä päiväunilta pommitukseen, vain ymmärtääkseen, että kyseessä on niinkin tärkeä ilotulituksen aihe kuin Saksa-Turkki jalkapallo-ottelu. On myös täysin normaalia, jopa itsestään selvää, että naapurisi työntää peräkärryä pimeällä kadulla kyydissään asia, jota voi vain kuvailla valtavaksi laser-aseeksi. Tosin ottaen huomioon, että itse on "se tyttö joka kalasti kämppiksen alushousuja naapurin lautasantennista", taidan sopia joukkoon vallan mainiosti.

It's quite exhilarating to live within the minority of the city. You might just wake up from your nap and find out that the bombing you woke up to is caused by the insane soccer fans celebrating Germany-Turkey football game with fireworks. It's also completely normal, if not self-evident, to see your neighbour pushing a trailer down the street with what could only be described as a massive laser gun on it. On the other hand, being known as "the girl who fished her flatmate's underwear from a neighbour's satellite antenna" isn't entirely normal either. I think I fit in just fine.

HURJAA! Uusi ulkoasu. Olin jo vajonnut kadonneen motivaation mustaan aukkoon, mutta kuinka mukavaa onkaan päästä esittelemään teille entistä isompaa naamaani ja tyhjää viinilasia. Kävin seuralaisineni katsastamassa Saksassa 21. lokakuuta ensi-iltaan tulevan Banksy - Exit through the gift shop dokkarin ennakkonäytöksessä viime viikolla. Syynä saattaa olla kummasti tyhjentynyt viinilasi, mutta elokuva oli huippu ja Banksy hurmaava.
Ihan kiva muuten, jos mainitsisitte jos joku on teknisesti vialla blogissa, esim. kaikki näkyy keltaisena. Mielipiteet / muut valitukset eivät kiinnosta, kiitos, silmät huutavat muutenkin jo hooteeälämmää. Vanhat kuvat ja kirjoitukset näkyvät ihan epäsopivina, näkykööt. I attended the pre-screening of the new Banksy documentary, Exit through the gift shop last week. Although the empty glass of wine might have something to do with it, I found the movie rather excellent. Recommend.
